SQLLunch has arrived in London.
12:30 sharp start , downstairs bar at the Golden Fleece EC4N 1SP.
Agenda :
12:30 - 12:31 Welcome and hello
12:31 - 13:15 Remote Presentation : Jeff Moden - Expanding Hierarchies
For this session of the SQLLunchUK Users Group, Jeff Moden
talks about and demonstrates techniques on “Expanding Hierarchies” (lecture
first given at PASS 2010). This is
normally a 90 minute session but Jeff understands that we already know the
basics and promises that he’ll be able to blast us through it all in something
less than 60 minutes.
You might expect a session on this subject to focus on the
HierarchyID that came out with 2008 and nothing could be further from the truth
for this session. Jeff is going to take
us on a whirl-wind ride from Adjacency Lists through Hierarchical Paths
(skipping the HierarchyID almost entirely) right to how to convert a million
node Adjacency List to super high performance Nested Sets in about 2 minutes
using a new method he designed. You’ve
just got to know that new method involves some form of a Tally Table.
As a grand finale, Jeff shows us how to build a single table
“data mart” from the million node hierarchy that answers nearly all the
questions you could as of such a hierarchy.
Speaker Bio:
With nearly 30,000 posts and more than 25 articles to his
name, Jeff Moden is one of the leading contributors on SQLServerCentral.com
where he coined the term “RBAR” which stands for “Row By Agonizing Row”. Jeff has been a Microsoft SQL Server MVP
since 2008, won the 2011 Red Gate Exceptional DBA Award, and has worked with
SQL Server since 1996. His easy to read
and light hearted articles have turned previously difficult to understand
“advanced” subjects, like the Tally Table, into everyday tools that everyone
can easily understand and use. Jeff has
presented at PASS 2010, 2 SQL Saturdays, and at many SQL Server User Group
meetings both in person and remotely.
