**** POSTPONED *****
Unfortunately Rob has had to pull out of the meeting on Thursday, therefore I am postponing the meeting till a future date
Scottish Area SQL Server User Group Meeting, Edinburgh - Tuesday 16th April
We will also have the usual food and prize draws!
18:00 - 18:30 - Introduction and Networking
What's happening in the SQL Server World, bring any questions or problems you need to solve, and a time for nuggets - do you have one?
18:30 - 19:30 - The how's and why's of partitioning - Martin Bell
Table partitioning has been available in SQL Server since release 2005, partitioned views have been available before that. So if they have been available for that long why do so few people use it? This talk looks at why to use table partitioning or a partitioned view and how to implement the chosen solution.
19:30 - 19:50 - Break
Time for pizza and more networking.
19:50 - 20:50 - Real world SQL Server compression - Rob Carrol
In this session, Ron will show you how you can use SQL Server Data and Backup compression to drive cost savings through more efficient space utilization. He will also show you a nice side-effect of compression... improved I/O performance!
Rob has been working with SQL Server since 2000 in a variety of roles, including developer, consultancy and DBA roles. He spent over 4 years working for Microsoft as a SQL Server Premier Field Engineer, specializing in performance tuning, database troubleshooting and Business Intelligence. He recently left Microsoft and is now working as a senior DBA for an Investment Bank.
Rob is an MCITP in SQL Server 2005/2008, DBA and BI. When he's not working with SQL Server, I enjoy spending time with his wife and 3 daughters and pursuing his latest mid-life
crisis obsession... running!
20:50 - 21:00 - Feedback, Prize Draw and Close
21:00 - onwards - Drinks in the Orchard
This meeting will be kindly hosted by Craneware
