AM - Overview and Strategy

09:00

Registration Opens

09:30

Morris Novello
SQL Server Product Manager, Microsoft UK

Morris will take the SQLRelay audience on a journey across SQL Server 2012 new innovations that span traditional boxed software, appliances, and cloud. Morris will address some of the tough issues facing IT and dev organizations today; mission critical SLAs that are simply expected, the explosion of data volumes with the need to enable end-user insight, and the evolution into the cloud world. Both IT and developers attendees will see technologies from SQL Server that help solve today’s growing challenges.

I have no idea what you will be doing with SQL Server 2012 as there are so many
new features in the latest version. So after a short high level overview of the
new stuff we’ll dip into the things that you want to see in more detail, be that
the database engine, the new BI stuff, data warehousing and a bit of
development. The only technology I won’t be showing is PowerPoint as you’ve
        probably seen that before.
A lap around the SSIS Catalog

SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 includes a new database referred to
as the SSIS Catalog. SSIS developers and administrators are going to spend a lot
of time in here and, like any database, you need a good handle on what secrets
it holds. In this session I'll take you on a demo-heavy (i.e. no slides) tour of
the SSIS Catalog so you can get a handle on the sea-change this is going to
        bring to SSIS development.

14:00

Break

14:15

Tony Rogerson
SQL Server MVP, Freelance SQL Server Specialist

Always On - SANless High Availability

Through using Availability Groups we no longer rely on shared storage to provide
a usable and fully redundant copy of your Production databases. This session
will talk through the move away from SAN to SANless within the DR space and will
also give a level 400 talk on Availability Groups within SQL Server 2012.

SQL 2012 Highly Available BI Environments from the Field

This one hour session will provide insight on what to expect when deploying a
highly available end to end SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence environment as
experienced from the field. As well as leveraging the SQL Server Business
Intelligence skills that you possess. You will also gain an insight into the
additional skills and knowledge that you will need to ensure the successful
delivery of technologies such as such as PowerPivot, PowerView, SQL Server
Reporting Services and SQL Server Analysis Services on a robust architecture.
SQL Server MVP

SQL Server 2012 backward compatibility, do not ignore the facts!

Backward compatibility is nice feature in very new product release, however to continue business-as-is many of us will use it. However there are certain risks associated using the backward compatibility feature such as deprecated, discontinued, breaking changes and behaviour changes on the application. In this session we will overview the associated risks and ways to overcome majority of compatibility issues (code and features) to migrate data platform to SQL Server 2012 successfully.

19:00

Break and Pizza

Rob will try and pick out some of the things that you may not have been picked up by marketing

20:30

Feedback and Prize Draw

For this session of the SQLLunchUK Users Group, Jeff Moden
talks about and demonstrates techniques on “Expanding Hierarchies” (lecture
first given at PASS 2010). This is
normally a 90 minute session but Jeff understands that we already know the
basics and promises that he’ll be able to blast us through it all in something
less than 60 minutes.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

You might expect a session on this subject to focus on the
HierarchyID that came out with 2008 and nothing could be further from the truth
for this session. Jeff is going to take
us on a whirl-wind ride from Adjacency Lists through Hierarchical Paths
(skipping the HierarchyID almost entirely) right to how to convert a million
node Adjacency List to super high performance Nested Sets in about 2 minutes
using a new method he designed. You’ve
just got to know that new method involves some form of a Tally Table.

As a grand finale, Jeff shows us how to build a single table
“data mart” from the million node hierarchy that answers nearly all the
questions you could as of such a hierarchy.

Speaker Bio:

With nearly 30,000 posts and more than 25 articles to his
name, Jeff Moden is one of the leading contributors on SQLServerCentral.com
where he coined the term “RBAR” which stands for “Row By Agonizing Row”. Jeff has been a Microsoft SQL Server MVP
since 2008, won the 2011 Red Gate Exceptional DBA Award, and has worked with
SQL Server since 1996. His easy to read
and light hearted articles have turned previously difficult to understand
“advanced” subjects, like the Tally Table, into everyday tools that everyone
can easily understand and use. Jeff has
presented at PASS 2010, 2 SQL Saturdays, and at many SQL Server User Group
meetings both in person and remotely.

SQL Relay 2012 brings SQL Server experts to your locality; full day seminars in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London.

The morning session taken by Morris Novello, SQL Server Product Manager and
Andrew Fryer, Technical Evangelist, Development and Platform Group; the session commences with Morris
discussing technical challenges facing IT and dev organisations and also provide an overview on SQL
Server 2012, Andrew will then dip into the new features within SQL Server 2012.

The afternoon session is led by SQL Server MVP's, among them Chris Testa O'Neill, Allan Mitchell,
Martin Bell, Jamie Thompson, Chris Webb and Tony Rogerson.

Sponsors - Premier

SSIS in SQL Server 2012

Come to this session and learn what all the fuss is about. SSIS has evolved
every time a new version is released and in SQL Server 2012 this is no
different. The main areas of focus are of course the new SSIS Server and the
capabilities it provides to logging. We will also take look at some of the
features that make our lives as ETL developers so much nicer.

Through using Availability Groups we no longer rely on shared storage to provide
a usable and fully redundant copy of your Production databases. This session
will talk through the move away from SAN to SANless within the DR space and will
also give a level 400 talk on Availability Groups within SQL Server 2012.

        SQL 2012 Distributed Replay

SQL Server Distributed Replay is a tool which can help remove the risk and
uncertainty of hardware consolidation and changes. Available as part of the SQL
Server installation, it goes beyond the capabilities of SQL Profiler to help
                                simulate a more realistic load.
that span traditional boxed software, appliances, and cloud. Morris will address

SLAs that are simply expected, the explosion of data volumes with the need to enable
end-user insight, and the evolution into the cloud world. Both IT and developers
attendees will see technologies from SQL Server that help solve today’s growing

I have no idea what you will be doing with SQL Server 2012 as there are so many
new features in the latest version. So after a short high level overview of the
new stuff we’ll dip into the things that you want to see in more detail, be that
the database engine, the new BI stuff, data warehousing and a bit of development.
The only technology I won’t be showing is PowerPoint as you’ve probably seen that
                                    before.

SQL Relay 2012 brings SQL Server experts to your locality; full day seminars in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London.

The morning session taken by Morris Novello, SQL Server Product Manager, Steve
Shaw, Database Technology Manager from Intel and
another speaker TBC; the session commences with Morris discussing technical
challenges facing IT and dev organisations and also provide an overview on SQL
    Server 2012.

The afternoon session is led by SQL Server MVP's, among them Chris Testa O'Neill, Allan Mitchell,
Martin Bell, Jamie Thompson, Chris Webb and Tony Rogerson.

Sponsors - Premier

10:00

Steve Shaw

SQL Server on Intel systems: tips, tools and tuning for maximum performance and scalability

This presentation gives you the inside track on optimizing and testing SQL
performance on Intel Servers. We will look at Operating System and SQL Server
configuration to get the best possible performance and scalability from Intel
servers. We will also give an insight into the next generation of platforms to
show how to get the maximum from CPU features such as Turbo-Boost and
Hyper-Threading, Scalable Memory and Solid-State Disk features to take your SQL
Server environments to the next level of performance. We will also consider both
OLTP and Query based testing to measure and compare SQL Server configurations in
                                your own environment.

What's new in SQL Server Analysis Services 2012?

The 2012 sees Analysis Services splitting into two: the Multidimensional model, which is basically the Analysis Services of cubes and dimensions that we're all familiar with, and the new Tabular model which is very similar to PowerPivot. This session will cover what's new in Analysis Services 2012 Multidimensional, provide a brief overview of the Tabular model, discuss their relative strengths and weaknesses and help you decide which one is appropriate for your project.

14:00
Break
